Fabulous French Gardens

Garden à la Française is an ornamental garden expressing the social pleasantries of a civilized life. A French garden is part of the Baroque period when the style of clothes, architecture and paintings were conspicuous and showy. Louis XIV was king and his head gardener, Andre Le Notre, became famous after creating Versailles, Louis‘ palace.

The French were inspired by the work of the Italian Renaissance (14th and 15th centuries ) and copied their style in a big way. The French made everything bigger to show man’s dominance and manipulation over nature. The French garden represented authority, wealth and power.

Renee Descartes, the founder of analytical geometry, was another influence on the Garden à la Française. Descartes objectified the world in straight lines. You can see the mathematical coordinate system in the layout of the French garden.

The French were experts in controlling nature and contriving prim, angular gardens. You can do the same by adding fountains and a wild animal exhibit. If you really want a challenge, create a flower bed in a detailed, geometrical shape. Have chains of one color flower intertwining with chains of another color flower. Low growing plants like germander, boxwood, hyssop or lavender are perfect for this design.

The French garden shows a love for innovation and harmonizing architecture with its environment. Notre’s idea of a huge garden with intricate, symmetrical designs transformed the natural environment into a work of art. The Garden à la Française symbolized the power of the master of the house.

How to Plan Your Garden Properly

Whether you are planning a flower garden, vegetable garden, or a patio garden, the first place to start is with a plan. Whether you are planting a garden for a new home and bare ground or an established lawn area that you want to beautify or landscape, whether you are a novice gardener or an expert gardener, you will still need to start with a plan.

Begin by measuring the length and width of the area where you want to have a garden. Then make a sketch to get a clear picture of the whole garden, including any obstacles in the area. Decide on your priorities, how much you have to spend on your garden, and what plants you really want in your garden. Sketch in the plants you have decided on, leaving enough room for each.

Patio gardening or landscaping plans would begin with a theme that you are interested in, whether you would be using containers or planting directly into the ground. Again, make a sketch, keeping in mind if you will be entertaining or barbecuing in the area and what lawn furniture you will need for your own enjoyment and to accommodate your guests. Now, decide what plants and types of plants you are interested in and put them into your sketch to see if they will fit.

Vegetable gardens have other factors to consider, such as where to plant your garden. Determine if you will be near a water supply from which you will be able to reach your garden with a hose. Another thing to consider is sunlight. Vegetables need eight hours of sunlight a day. Choose what vegetables you want and put them in your sketch, keeping the needs of each type of vegetable in mind. Happy gardening will be ensured if you do your advance planning.

Fertilizers as Plant Food

Fertilizer is the food that plants need to grow and thrive. Plant food is fertilizer that has the necessary nutrients to produce healthy plants whether it is organic or inorganic. There are scientific studies that show beyond a shadow of a doubt that one is better than than the other. Although people believe organic fertilizer is better for the environment.
The three main nutrients that are vital to plant growth are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Each of these are found naturally on earth. Manufacturers found ways to harness them so they can be used in a positive way in plant food. Nitrogen is found in the air and converted into a form that plants benefit from. It also is the main compent in chlorophyll. Phosphorus is essential to all forms of life and is made into fertilizer by taking the remains of ancient marine life found in rock deposits and volcanic activity in China. A concentrated phosphorus solution is produced by combining the phosphate with sulfuric acid.

Potassium is mined from naturally occurring ores that are farmed when seas and oceans have dried up. After the ore is brought to the surface of the earth, the unwanted minerals are removed and the potassium is granulated. Organic fertilizer such as compost, peat moss, and manure do burn or harm plants like inorganic fertilizers can. They also have long lasting positive effects on soil. Mulch like hay, leaves, grass, and bark help aerate the soil. They also help protect the soil from temperature change while adding nutrients.

Growing Beautiful Gardens

There are many beautiful flowers out there to plant in your garden. For now, however, we can look at rose gardens. Almost everyone would love to have a beautiful rose garden in their yard.

Roses can be hard to grow but they are not impossible to have in your garden, especially if you do some research and preparation before planting. When you have these beautiful flowers they will be worth all the effort you put into growing them.

There are several different varieties of rose bushes. You should have shrub roses in your flower beds, while climbers are used on fences and arbors. For ground cover, you can use landscape roses and miniature roses are perfect for pots. Roses come in almost any color you could want. There are red and yellow, which are the most common, but there are also white, lavender, peach, orange as well as variegated petals.

Six hours of sun each day will make your roses happy. That is the minimum amount of sun for roses and they really would like to get full sun. If you can plant your garden facing east, this would be perfect for your roses. The morning sun is not as harsh as the afternoon sun.

Shrub roses are usually the easiest to take care of, so unless you have a special requirement for a climber or a landscape rose, try stay with the shrub rose which gives you a lot of options for color and fragrance. The best time to buy your rose bushes is in the spring. This means it’s not likely that you will see them blooming, but they usually have a tag with a picture of the color.
