How to Plan Your Garden Properly

Whether you are planning a flower garden, vegetable garden, or a patio garden, the first place to start is with a plan. Whether you are planting a garden for a new home and bare ground or an established lawn area that you want to beautify or landscape, whether you are a novice gardener or an expert gardener, you will still need to start with a plan.

Begin by measuring the length and width of the area where you want to have a garden. Then make a sketch to get a clear picture of the whole garden, including any obstacles in the area. Decide on your priorities, how much you have to spend on your garden, and what plants you really want in your garden. Sketch in the plants you have decided on, leaving enough room for each.

Patio gardening or landscaping plans would begin with a theme that you are interested in, whether you would be using containers or planting directly into the ground. Again, make a sketch, keeping in mind if you will be entertaining or barbecuing in the area and what lawn furniture you will need for your own enjoyment and to accommodate your guests. Now, decide what plants and types of plants you are interested in and put them into your sketch to see if they will fit.

Vegetable gardens have other factors to consider, such as where to plant your garden. Determine if you will be near a water supply from which you will be able to reach your garden with a hose. Another thing to consider is sunlight. Vegetables need eight hours of sunlight a day. Choose what vegetables you want and put them in your sketch, keeping the needs of each type of vegetable in mind. Happy gardening will be ensured if you do your advance planning.
